역시나 토퍼는 헐리웃에 물들지 않은 바람직한 청년이다.

여러 헐리웃스타들과 파티를 즐기는 대신 그의 친구들(배우가 아닌)과 함께 보내기를 더 좋아하는

토퍼 말대로 배우는 단지 '직업'의 한 종류일 뿐이라는 것을 제대로 보여주는 토퍼의 행동이다.

You've been on a whirlwind world-wide tour to promote Spider-Man 3. How are you holding up?

I think the jet lag worked for me today. This is my ninth city, but Sydney's great, I mean, my room has the most amazing view of the harbour. Plus the weather's unbelievable — it's nicer than LA. I got the weekend off which was great. We did one of those fast boat tours around the harbour.

But the film is out now so you're rushed on...

Yeah, to obtain privacy they open the film everywhere on the same day which is smart. But on the first (Spider-Man film) they didn't and Tobey (Maguire) was telling me how much he enjoyed taking time going from city to city. But then again it's good to get it all over and done with, to rip the Bandaid off quickly

How did you enjoy working with Tobey?

Tobey's really funny which is something a lot of people don't get about him because he's such a serious actor. But a lot of the time (during filming) we'd just be laughing the whole time. It's weird, because the movie's so dark and clearly we don't have a good relationship in the movie, but we had a lot of fun in real life.

토비랑 스파이더맨3에선 적의관계이지만 이상하리만큼 친했다구,,

그때문인지 토비가 토퍼를 보고선

살빼야겠다는 욕구를 크게 느꼈다고 하더니

토비는 그대로더군.....:D

Did you enjoy working on such a huge franchise?

It was amazing. I was a big fan of both of the first two films. But I was an even bigger fan of the comic books. Ironically, when my character (Venom) was being born in the comic books was when I got into them.

토퍼가 코믹북의 세계로 들어갔을때 VENOM이 탄생했다는 기막힌 우연이~

So you had lots of pre-existing Venom knowledge?

In the late '80s, when I was collecting comic books, Venom was just it. So it was a big deal when I got asked to play him. I had to play it cool because we hadn't discussed my salary so I was like, "Maybe." But really I was thinking "I'll pay you to do it!" It was cool.

Did you do a lot of your own stunts?

Well as much as I could. Getting the make-up done took four hours to do every day and the suit took about 45 minutes to put on, too. You have the suit up to here (around the neck area) and then they put the fangs and everything on. It was really painful. It was physically painful. And then you're doing stunts where you get bruises...

그러나 베놈의 suit는 너무나 고통스러웠다고,,,,

We hear you couldn't go to the bathroom once the suit was on. Was that harder than doing the stunts?

Yeah. I asked everybody not to talk about it. The worst thing was when somebody said, "Do you want to go to the bathroom?" And you'd be like, "Well you know what, I didn't but now I do." The other thing isn't even an option!

프로정신이 있는 토퍼는 그 불편한 베놈옷을 입고서는 화장실도 가지않았다고,,

그래서 화장실안가니?라고 묻는것이 가장 싫었다고 고백한다.

What do you mean, "the other thing"?

They cut a hole in the crotch part which was okay because you had a codpiece and then — I couldn't use my hand because I had the claws — so they'd cut a hole (near my wrist) and I would kind of dig with that. So you're in this little bathroom in your trailer and... Yeah! It's things like that where you go, "I'll tell this story on Jay Leno, but it's really annoying right now."

앞선 인터뷰에서의 the other thing이 무어냐고 묻는 기자말에

베놈옷에,,,,구멍을,,,,뚫어주었다는,,,,읽어보니 얼추 세군데;;;같은데ㅋㅋ

부끄러운 토퍼에게 가혹했을것 같다.흑흑

Did you have to work out a lot?

I'm a really skinny guy. So three months before I started the movie — and then the nine months during filming — I had to work out six days a week and then — what was much harder than the working out — I had to overeat. Which is actually really painful and I didn't expect that. I thought, "Oh, gain weight? Great! Krispy Kreme donuts!" But it was actually, like chicken and these healthy shakes and rice and broccoli. A lot of broccoli. It was hard but it was also when I saw the movie worth it.

운동을 많이 했냐는 질문에 정말마른 몸이기때문에 영화시작하기 전부터

영화를 찍는동안에 일주일에 6일을 항상 운동을 했다는 토퍼군

게다가 평소보다 많이먹었다는데....(ㅋㅋ나도 브로콜리 많이좋아해~)

물론 평소 토퍼보다 많이 굵어지긴 했는데,

지금은 원상태! 슬픈건,, 그 살쪘을때마져도 토퍼는 JUST SKINNY GUYBOY였다는 사실.

Because you look hot?

Well, I look bigger, sure. [Laughs] But the minute they said, "Stop", I stopped.

It must be a good time for you to be in Australia as we have so many Hollywood celebs in town — for the MTV AVMAs, TV Week Logies, Fantastic Four premiere...

And you had Fashion Week as well right? That's actually not what makes something a great place to be! I like getting away from the Hollywood set. I don't like celebrities that much.

Not any?

Well I like a few but that's very rare.

We don't read about you as much your colleagues...

No, but I've always been that way. It's because I'm boring. I love that there's a sense of mystery about me but I'm just boring, homebody type.

How old were you when you started working in Hollywood?

I was 18 or 19 when I started on That '70s Show.

It must have been overwhelming when you first got to LA?

The show was incredibly overwhelming! Just because I'd never acted before — that was my first audition. Someone had seen me in a high school play and said, "Do you want to come try out for this show?" But, yeah, fame — no matter what age you are is difficult to deal with. We were lucky because we were the same age and we all had each other. It was an interesting time.

토퍼는 70's Show를 정말 자랑스러워 하고, 소중하게 생각한다.

여기저기 인터뷰에서 항상 토퍼는 70's Show를 하게된것은 행운이었고, 놀라운 일이었다고 말한다.

하긴, 에릭을 실감나게 하기위해 그 많은 흥행영화들을 차!버렸던 토퍼이니,,

Going through that rise to fame together?

Oh yeah, there's that whole other element when you haven't been famous before so we learnt everything together. I hope we all get to work together again. I just want to go back in time — there were some really great times working on that show.

그때 출연진들은 모두 연기를 처음하는거나 마찬가지였기에,

서로에게 배우며 일했다고 한다.

아직도 토퍼는 그 시절을 아름답게 기억하고있다

Are you still in touch?

Absolutely. Wilmer (Valderrama) was going to come to the premiere in New York but couldn't because he was working. I'm still very close to Laura Prepon. And Ashton (Kutcher)'s probably the funniest person I've ever met. Working with him on a daily basis, I could tell you a bunch of stories. But actually I can't because they're a bunch of dirty stories [Laughs]. At least once a year, over that seven years, he'd have me in tears crying. I miss those guys a lot. They really are family.

윌머발데라마(갑자기 70쇼극중이름이 생각이안난다...)는 시사회에도 올정도로 친하고,

우리의 도나~와도 여전히 친하다고 한다.

이제는 데미 무어의 남편이 되어있는 애쉬튼은 토퍼가 지금껏 만나본 사람중에 가장 재미있는 친구라고 한다.

You've just produced your first film, Kids In America, which sounds like it will be great...

Well, you should wait until you've seen the movie! But I know what I like. I know when someone's authentic when they're peers of mine. And I think that authenticity is something that people my age are obsessed. So I was happy to be a part of casting.

Like, who are you talking about? Is that someone who's going to jail? [Laughs].

Well, yes the Paris Hiltons and that party girl ilk. I don't know them personally, I'm not saying they're bad people...

I do know them and they are. [Laughs].

I love Jason Schwartzman, Reese Witherspoon's great. And Seann William Scott I think is really funny.

They're all quite different...

Yeah. But I like people who are my age who have a very specific idea of who they are. Because a lot of people are still searching, which is fine, but I have a very strong idea of who I am.

 

You said a few years ago that you've never had to work with someone who you didn't personally like...

That's still true. I've been really fortunate. I've met actors who are jerks but luckily I've never had to work with them. And being a homebody I don't have to spend my off time with them either which is nice.

What do you do in your off time?

I'm so boring. [Laughs] I like board games and stuff like that but my hobby — because I work so much — is having dinner with friends. That's it! That's all I have time for. I have a very solid, core group of friends and I like getting them all together for dinner. And that's rare because the last couple of years I've worked so hard that's all I can really ask for in terms of free time. And also I'm lazy. I've hung up my tennis racket!
